Gambian police have arrested five of the fourteen remand prisoners who have escaped from Old Jeshwang last week, police spokesperson David Kujabi, has told Kerr Fatou.

“The four were arrested day before yesterday and one arrested earlier,” said Kujabi.

Gambia Prisons Service and other security outfits of the country have started a manhunt for the fourteen persons since their jailbreak on 2nd of August, during the rains.

It is said that the recent prison break is one of the biggest since after the 1981 coup.

Gambian Police have arrested six prison guards at the Jeshwang Prisons on Thursday night.

Following their escape, the public relations officer at the Prison, Modou Lamin Ceesay, told Kerr Fatou that the escapees succeeded because the alarm system failed and the facility is old.

The escapees include a Senegalese and twelve Gambians.

The escapees who are remand prisoners have committed some minor crimes like theft, burglary and others.
