The National Disaster Management Agency [NDMA] Executive Director, Sanna Dahaba has advised that tree planting could reduce the impact of windstorms.
“North Bank Region was hard hit by last night’s windstorm because we received 9 deaths [there]. When you look at the underlying factors that is why we have always been advocating tree planting. Because tree planting will serve as a break that will at least reduce the impact of disaster when it comes to windstorms. Tree planting could have reduced the impact of the windstorm disaster in the country,” Dahaba.
Mr. Dahaba said from the reports they received regarding the causes of the deaths is that either trees fell on their houses or the wind blew off their roofs and they sustained injury as a result died from those injuries.
Meanwhile, Mr. Alasan Senghore, Secretary General of the Gambia Red Cross Society said the windstorm that the country witnessed is not a normal one compared to the previous ones; while expressing the need for practices that can strengthen the resilience of the communities to withstand disasters in future.
“We really need everyone where we will not only look at the immediate needs during the recovery phase. But also looking ahead in terms of how our development practices can factor it in strengthening the resilience of the communities so that even if we have [a] bigger and stronger windstorm tomorrow or next year, their houses will be able to withstand that disaster,” Senghore stated.
It is reported that 10 people died- 9 in the North Bank and 1 in the West Coast Regions, 3, 140 people affected and 1,531 people are internally displaced because of the heavy windstorm in the country on the 7th of July, 2021.
