Nationwide manhunt for 13 escapees from Jeshwang prison

The Gambia Prisons Service and other security outfits of the country have started a manhunt for 13 persons who broke out of Jeshwang Prison on Thursday night, 2nd of August, during the rains.

The public relations officer at the Prison, Modou Lamin Ceesay, told Kerr Fatou that the escapees succeeded because the alarm system failed and the facility is old.

The escapees include a Senegalese and twelve Gambians.

“We have started a manhunt to catch them… We are working with the police and other sister services to help…,” Ceesay said.

Ceesay said they are soliciting the cooperation of the Gambians in their manhunt.

“Their names are with the police and other sister forces and at border posts… Their images will also be out by Monday at various security post…,” he added.

The escapees who are remand prisoners have committed some minor crimes like theft, burglary and others.

Prison escape is not very often in Gambia. The last major one that happened in the country was at the State Central Prison, Mile 2, in the early 90s.
