The Gambia’s National Assembly on Wednesday passed the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2025, a measure aimed at expanding gratuity and pension benefits for lawmakers, their families, and designated successors in cases of death, resignation, or recall from office.

The bill, introduced by nominated member Kebba Lang Fofana, cleared its second reading amid a robust debate over its scope and potential implications. It has now been referred to the Assembly Business Committee, which will determine whether it should be examined by a standing committee or the Committee of the Whole Assembly.

Supporters of the legislation argued that it addresses longstanding gaps in existing law and provides crucial financial protection to the families of former legislators.

Under the proposed amendment, if a member dies during their five-year term after serving at least one year, their next of kin would receive a gratuity equivalent to 25 percent of the total emoluments the member earned while in office. The same provision applies to lawmakers who resign or are recalled after completing a minimum of one year of service.

Proponents contend the bill ensures fairness and recognizes the service of National Assembly members, while critics have raised questions about the financial impact on public coffers. The Assembly will continue deliberations as the bill moves through the next stages of scrutiny.
