Kemeseng Sanneh (Kexx Sanneh), candidate for Niamina West critiqued the manner President Adama Barrow conducts his ongoing nationwide tour.

The People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) candidate for the Niamina West constituency alleged that Barrow’s actions are contrary to the purpose of the tour stipulated in Section 222 (15) of the 1997 Constitution.

“I decided to suspend my campaign today to attend the President tour in order to have first information of his speech and examine whether the tour is line with the purpose it was established in the constitution.

“Unfortunately, the entire meeting from one speaker to another is asking the people to vote for the NPP candidate and ridiculing the independent and other candidates. The President should know that this is a constitutional requirement as stipulated in section 222 subsection (15) of the Constitution,” he wrote on his Facebook page on Monday.

Kexx added that the purpose of the tour as clearly stated in the Constitution, is for the President to familiarise himself or herself with current conditions and the effects of government policies, and it is not meant to serve as a platform to snipe at political opponents.

“On the contrary, it is meant to provide a platform for the people to air their concerns and aspirations and for the President to take those concerns into account in reviewing or formulating policies, programmes and projects to address the needs of the citizenry.

“Another wastage of state resources but I will address this in my next rally at Niamina Dalaba and explain to the people of Niamina West the purpose of the nationwide and how much money is approved for the tour”, he said.

The Gambian President is currently on a nationwide tour. The tour which started on the 19th would run up to the 31st of March 2022.

Meanwhile, Section 222 (15) of the 1997 Constitution guarantees the President to undertake a nation-wide tour at least twice a year in order to familiarise himself or herself with current conditions and the effect of government policies.

However, ahead of the tour, a missive from the National People’s Party stated that the President would use the tour as an opportunity to thank constituents for the trust and confidence in him by voting him in office massively in the December; as well as to ask the electorates throughout the country to finish the job by voting in candidates of NPP and partner parties countrywide in the 9th April  National Assembly Election.
