Kemo Bojang Says UMC Aims to End Decades of Poverty and Corruption in The Gambia

Kemo Bojang, the newly elected Deputy Party Leader for Political and Media Affairs of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has said the party intends to bring an end to what he described as more than six decades of entrenched poverty and corruption in The Gambia.

Speaking on Saturday at the movement’s national congress, Bojang said Gambians have long endured persistent economic hardship and governance challenges since independence in 1965, and that meaningful change now depends on citizens themselves.

“The people want an advanced Gambia, free from poverty,” he said. “For decades, we have continued to confront the same issues of poverty and corruption. It is only Gambians who can put an end to this.”

Bojang noted that the UMC had evolved rapidly from a little-known idea into a growing political force within six months, attributing its rise to increasing public demand for a new political direction. He said early skepticism about the movement’s viability had given way to broader national support.

He described the UMC as a coalition of individuals from diverse political backgrounds, united by frustration with what he called repeated unfulfilled promises by past leadership. “Unite came into being because of continuous failed promises in Gambian politics, and Unite will not be a betrayer,” he said.

According to Bojang, the party seeks to represent a broad cross-section of Gambian society and is committed to building a government that prioritizes the needs of ordinary citizens. He outlined plans focused on easing economic hardship, creating employment opportunities for young people, improving livelihoods, and providing tangible support to farmers.

Addressing the issue of irregular migration, Bojang said many young Gambians leave the country in pursuit of better opportunities abroad due to limited prospects at home. He stressed that restoring hope domestically would be central to the party’s agenda.

He also urged eligible citizens to register and obtain voter cards, emphasizing the importance of civic participation in shaping the country’s future. “Your votes are your power,” he said.
