The Government of The Gambia has cautioned citizens against traveling abroad to participate in ongoing armed conflicts, amid reports that some Gambians have enlisted in foreign wars.
In a press release dated 20 February 2026, the Ministry of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services disclosed that information available to the authorities indicates that a number of Gambian nationals have lost their lives in such conflicts.
“Information available to the Government indicates that a number of Gambian nationals have tragically lost their lives in such conflicts. The Government extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected during this difficult time,” the press release read.
Describing the development as deeply concerning, the Government extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected.
The statement underscored that the state neither supports nor authorizes any Gambian citizen to engage in foreign hostilities. It emphasized that individuals who choose to travel to conflict zones and take part in fighting do so entirely at their own risk and responsibility.
Authorities further urged citizens to refrain from traveling abroad for the purpose of participating in armed conflicts, warning that such actions expose them to grave dangers, including serious injury, death, legal repercussions, and other unforeseen risks.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of Gambian citizens, the Government called on families, community leaders, and religious authorities to advise their members against involvement in foreign wars.
