In his 2026 State of the Nation Address on Thursday, the President announced a major government investment in the country’s agricultural sector, aimed at improving productivity and ensuring national food security.
The government has allocated 703 million Dalasis (approximately $13.5 million) to the National Seeds Programme, which will fund seed and fertilizer subsidies and expand agricultural credit by an estimated 20 percent.
“To boost productivity and food security, the Government continues to implement the National Seeds Programme. Through it, over seven hundred and three million Dalasis (GMD703 million) have been allocated for seed and fertilizer subsidies and expansion of agricultural credit by an estimated twenty percent (20%),” he said.
The President further revealed that D300 million will be injected to recapitalize the National Food Security, Processing, and Marketing Corporation, reinforcing the country’s capacity to manage and distribute key food resources.
Highlighting the progress of crop production, the president noted, “Total cereal output increased from 124,337 metric tons in 2024 to 131,798 metric tons in 2025. This growth includes an eleven percent rise in millet, a nine percent increase in rice production to 57,225 metric tons, and a five percent gain in maize production.”
Cash crop production also saw notable improvement, with groundnut output rising sixteen percent, from 52,642 metric tons in 2024 to 61,043 metric tons in 2025. The President added, “This surge prompted a government-backed two-billion-dalasi intervention to procure up to fifty thousand metric tons during the 2025/26 trade season.”
To further enhance productivity and resilience, the government has procured 189 tractors and 20 rotavator boats, expanded irrigation infrastructure, and strengthened livestock health systems, providing comprehensive support across the agricultural value chain.
