Musa Yali Batchilly, Secretary General and Party Leader of the Gambia Action Party (GAP), has urged the Gambian government to lead the peace process in Senegal through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“We call on the government of the Gambia to spearhead the peace process in Senegal through the regional bloc and also call on the withdrawal of Senegalese military personnel serving the ECOMIG forces in The Gambia as their country needs their loyalty and service to their nation more than The Gambia,” he said.
The Gambia Action Party also calls on ECOWAS to facilitate the ongoing conflict in Senegal that led to the death of ‘innocent’ people.
“As neighboring countries, we must realize that our bond with Senegal is beyond the sharing of borders, but we are intertwined together through cultures and other societal means,” he said.
The party urged ECOWAS to take all necessary measures to ensure that sitting governments within the subregion protect political opponents from oppression, delay tactics, and other forms of persecution.
“Macky Sall has a worse tradition of censoring political opponents, and that must be stopped by all means possible,” he said.
The GAP leader also urged all Senegalese citizens to maintain decorum and fight for their rights through the court of law.
“Equally, we urge the Senegalese judicial sector to adjudicate all matters of public interest according to the laws of the land without favoritism. Whilst expressing our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, we remain hopeful that peace will rain in Senegal,” he concluded.
