Gambia Immigration Cracks Down on Irregular Migration in North Bank

The Gambia Immigration Department said its Border Patrol Unit in the North Bank Region intercepted 15 irregular migrants in Kerr Jane Village after receiving intelligence about an attempted journey through the River Gambia, a route authorities say is used by some migrants seeking to reach Europe.

The group comprised 12 Guinean nationals and three Malians, according to the department. Officials said those intercepted included eight men, seven women, and one minor.

The operation was carried out by the department’s Border Patrol Unit, which acted on intelligence that led officers to the migrants before they could continue their journey.

The migrants were transferred to the Gambia Immigration Department’s Immigration Post in Barra, where they are undergoing further processing and other immigration procedures, the department said in a statement.

The department said the operation underscores its continued efforts to combat irregular migration, disrupt migrant-smuggling networks, and promote what it described as safe, orderly, and regular migration in The Gambia.
