The Gambia Immigration Department said it intercepted 53 people suspected of attempting to migrate irregularly through three coastal communities in the West Coast Region during a joint operation with international partners.

The operation, carried out by the department’s Border Patrol Unit under the Tanji Migration Management Unit, took place in Madiana, Brufut, and Kuloro Village. It was conducted in collaboration with the second phase of the Common Operational Partnership (COP II), an initiative funded by the European Union and implemented in The Gambia by the Spanish National Police.

According to the department, those intercepted included 30 Senegalese nationals, 22 Gambians, and one Togolese citizen. The group comprised 43 men, eight women, and two minors.

In a statement, the Immigration Department said the operation demonstrated the continuing cooperation between the agency and COP II in efforts to combat irregular migration.

The department added that the operation reflects its broader commitment to working with international partners to curb irregular migration while promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways.
