France has announced a €500,000 (D27,833,716) project to support the teaching of French in Gambia, thus solidifying the country’s place among French-speaking nations, according to France Diplomatie.

Gambia has been a member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) since 2018. This does not however affect the country as an English speaking nation.

The meeting between the Gambian and French diplomats offered an opportunity to reaffirm the solid ties between the two countries.

Since the donors’ conference of May 2018, France is Gambia’s leading bilateral provider of funds, giving the country €50 million in assistance for the period of 2018-2021.

The money supports agricultural projects as well as access to water and electricity. France is also providing support to Gambia by strengthening its security system, making a French aid worker available to the Gambian national security advisor.
