A Gambian soldier who was implicated in the December 2014 attack on the State House has donated food items to state central prison, Mile 2, through his charity Malick Fama Foundation.
Captain Alagie Jobe, an ADC to army chief of defense staff Masaneh Kinteh, was serving a life sentence at Mile 2 until he received a presidential pardon in 2017.
“My goal is to draw our attention to the fact that people who are serving in those jails deserve our care… It is our responsibility for them to come out better person,” Jobe told journalists.
The food items include 20 bags of sugar, 31 packs of tea, butter, milk powder among others.
Jobe said his experience in prison showed that one may find it difficult to have a balanced diet which is why they decided to donate food.
“It does not mean that they do not eat food. They do but this is to supplement what they have,” he added.
The ceremony was attended by former chief of defense staff Lang Tombong Tamba who has also spent couple of years at Mile 2 on life sentence.
Ex-general Tamba who handed the donated items to director of administration at prison services Lamin Sanneh said life at the country’s main prison is a tough one.
“This will help in reducing government’s expenditure on Mile 2,” said Sanneh.
The charity has been established by Jobe and his wife Ndey Busso in 2018 and this is their first donation.
Jobe said they intend to also support schools and Quranic recitation centres in the future.
