Amadou Sanneh, the national treasurer of the United Democratic Party, has urged political parties in The Gambia to set aside their differences and work collaboratively in the national interest, emphasizing the need for unity, accountability, and sustained development.
Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Mr. Sanneh said that across the political spectrum, there is growing recognition of challenges facing the country, which he argued should serve as a basis for dialogue and cooperation among parties.
“I think, genuinely, of all the parties, including UDP, we need to come together because we are all seeing the same thing in this current government,” he said, adding that such cooperation would require political maturity and a willingness to prioritize national progress over partisan considerations.
Mr. Sanneh stressed that development is a gradual process, built over time through successive administrations. He said each government plays a role in laying foundations that should be strengthened by those that follow.
“Development is not one day’s work,” he said. “You lay the foundation stones, put the country in a better shape, and whoever comes after continues that development.”
He also called for greater political responsibility among leaders, urging them to move beyond personal or party interests and focus on the broader needs of the country.
“We have to rise above self-interest and look at the country,” he said. “People are really yearning for change.”
Mr. Sanneh further emphasized the importance of accountability, calling on citizens to scrutinize government actions and spending, particularly in relation to infrastructure projects.
“As citizens, we should question what is happening,” he said. “They are campaigning that roads have been built, but at what cost? It is time to bring accountability to the table.”
