Former Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) National Assembly Member for Niamina East, Omar Ceesay, has officially joined the UNITE Party, days after resigning from the GDC over its decision to enter into an alliance with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).

In a statement announcing his new political affiliation, Mr. Ceesay said the move followed extensive consultations and careful deliberations with his team.

“After careful reflection, consultation, and consideration with my team, we have unanimously decided, with full conviction, to join the UNITE Party under the leadership of Talib Ahmed Bensouda,” he said.

Mr. Ceesay said the decision was driven by what he believes to be the best interests of the country and the broader public.

“This decision was made in the best interest of the general good,” he added.

His defection comes shortly after he resigned from the GDC, citing concerns over the party’s alliance with the NPP and its implications for the country’s democratic future.

Mr. Ceesay is among a growing number of political figures who have aligned themselves with the UNITE Party as political parties reposition themselves ahead of The Gambia’s 2026 presidential election.
