Ahmad Gitteh, a special adviser to the minister of digital economy, has rejected claims that President Adama Barrow has lost public support, arguing that his popularity should be tested at the ballot box rather than determined through protests or political pressure.
In a statement posted Saturday on his official Facebook page, Mr. Gitteh said opposition efforts to discourage the president from seeking re-election were inconsistent with claims that he was no longer popular.
“If that is truly the case, then why fear his participation in the election?” Mr. Gitteh asked. “In every democracy, popularity is determined at the ballot box and not through protests or intimidation. If the Constitution allows him to contest, let the people decide.”
Mr. Gitteh said the National People’s Party had already selected Mr. Barrow as its candidate for the 2026 presidential election. He expressed confidence that the party would retain power, saying that, with divine support, it expected to secure another victory.
He also urged NPP members and supporters to remain focused on the campaign, promote the party’s agenda, and highlight the government’s record in office. The party, he said, must clearly present its plans for the country’s future.
Mr. Gitteh said unity, discipline, and sustained political organizing would be essential to the NPP’s electoral prospects, adding that the party would be well positioned to win if its members remained focused on those priorities.
