The Republic of Namibia on Wednesday officially inaugurated its Honorary Consulate in The Gambia, marking a new chapter in diplomatic relations between the two countries during a ceremony that also commemorated Namibia’s belated 36th Independence anniversary.
The event brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests, highlighting decades of political solidarity and a shared commitment to expanding cooperation in diplomacy, trade, and investment.
Speaking at the ceremony, Namibia’s High Commissioner to The Gambia, Stanley Tsandib, said the establishment of the Honorary Consulate reflects Namibia’s determination to deepen its engagement with The Gambia and broaden cooperation beyond longstanding political ties.
He said the new diplomatic mission underscores Namibia’s commitment to strengthening its presence in The Gambia while creating new opportunities for economic collaboration and closer people-to-people relations.
Mr. Tsandib paid tribute to The Gambia’s support during Namibia’s liberation struggle, recalling that the country was among the African nations that stood firmly behind Namibia’s quest for independence. He said The Gambia provided political backing, diplomatic advocacy, and educational opportunities to many Namibians, contributing to the development of a generation of future leaders.
“On behalf of the people and Government of Namibia, I wish to express our deepest appreciation to the Government and the people of The Gambia. Namibia remains sincerely indebted to The Gambia for its friendship, solidarity, and support during some of the most challenging periods of our history,” Mr. Tsandib said.
While describing political relations between the two countries as strong, the High Commissioner said economic and commercial cooperation has yet to reach its full potential. He called for greater efforts to expand trade, investment, and other areas of mutual interest.
The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie, said the inauguration of the Honorary Consulate presents an opportunity to deepen collaboration between the two governments.
He reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, describing the relationship between the two countries as one built on shared history, mutual respect, and common aspirations.
“The enduring friendship between the people of The Gambia and Namibia is a point of pride for both our governments. This is a fitting opportunity to assure you of the commitment of The Gambia to elevate our strategic partnership to new stages so as to better benefit the two countries,” Mr. Njie said.
Relations between The Gambia and Namibia trace back to the 1970s and 1980s, when The Gambia supported Namibia’s struggle for independence by providing refuge, educational opportunities, and diplomatic backing to members of the liberation movement. Those historic ties have since evolved into a partnership founded on political solidarity, South-South cooperation and a shared commitment to African development.
