Henry Gomez, a presidential adviser and leader of the Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress (GPDP), said on Saturday that opposition parties would worsen the country’s economic challenges if they came to power, claiming that the price of a bag of rice would rise to D6000 under their administration.

Mr. Gomez made the remarks while addressing the congress of the Gambia Moral Party on behalf of the governing National People’s Party-led alliance. He defended President Adama Barrow’s economic record and urged Gambians not to be swayed by opposition criticism over the rising cost of living.

“The way they are telling you that a bag of rice is expensive, I swear to God, if you give them this country, a bag of rice will cost D6000,” Mr. Gomez told supporters.

He also accused opposition parties of criticizing persistent challenges, including electricity shortages, without offering practical alternatives. According to Mr. Gomez, opposition leaders have focused on attacking the government rather than working constructively to address national issues.

Defending the administration’s record, Mr. Gomez said President Barrow’s government had delivered significant development over the past decade and argued that governing the country requires experience and commitment.

“This country is in our hands. President, minister, permanent secretary, and director are all titles, but we are the government. If the country has peace, it is because of us. Yesterday and today are very different. Anybody who tells you President Adama Barrow is not developing the country is deceiving you,” he said.

Mr. Gomez also urged voters to be cautious of promises made by opposition parties, arguing that those who had not demonstrated results in the past could not be relied upon to improve the country’s fortunes. He maintained that the government’s development achievements were the result of sustained efforts over the past 10 years rather than overnight progress.
