Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has confirmed that the legislature has received formal petitions against Deputy Speaker Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, stemming from alleged audio recordings in which he made remarks of a tribal nature.

The Speaker made the disclosure on Thursday during a question-and-answer session at the National Assembly’s press briefing, held in connection with the second ordinary session of the 2026 legislative year.

“Yes. The assembly is in receipt of one or two petitions against our Deputy Speaker, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie,” Hon. Jatta said.

The Speaker outlined the standard procedural framework governing the handling of petitions submitted to parliament, noting that all such submissions must first be reviewed by the Assembly’s technical arm. “Usually, when we receive petitions, our technical arm of the assembly, the office of the clerk, ensures that all petitions are in conformity with our own standing orders, procedures, and submission-wise,” he explained.

Hon. Jatta confirmed that the petitions in question have already been subjected to this review process and are nearing completion. “So, since the receipt of those petitions, it underwent those processes, and it is almost finalized for us to inform the petitioners of the state of their petitions,” he said.

The speaker indicated that petitioners should expect to receive formal communication imminently and that any outstanding requirements—including amendments or resubmissions—would be conveyed directly to those concerned.

“I am hopeful that by tomorrow or so they should be able to receive it, and if there are going to be any changes or rearrangements, or resubmissions or whatever, it will be, we will be able to inform them about it,” he said.

Hon. Jatta concluded by reaffirming the Assembly’s position: “But that’s the case, as far as we know now, that, yes, we are in receipt, and it has been processed, and it’s almost finalized for information back to the petitioners.”
