Staff members at the University of Education, The Gambia, began a sit-down strike on June 1, escalating a dispute with university administrators over demands that have remained unresolved for weeks.

In a letter addressed to the vice chancellor and dated June 1, the Academic Staff Association of the University of Education, The Gambia, said it had issued a 14-day notice on May 1 after management failed to respond to concerns first raised more than a month earlier.

“We write with reference to our earlier correspondence dated 7th May 2026 regarding the unresolved demands presented to the University Management,” the association said. “As clearly stated in our previous letter, a fourteen (14) day notice was issued to ensure sufficient time to address the concerns raised. Regrettably, there has been no satisfactory progress on the matters presented.”

The association said the decision to withdraw labour followed through on prior warnings and resolutions communicated to the administration.

“We wish to formally remind your office that staff will proceed to lay down tools, with effect from the 1st June, 2026 until the demands submitted are adequately addressed,” the letter added.

Despite the strike, the group expressed hope that university officials would act swiftly to resolve the impasse and restore normal academic operations.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the chairperson of the governing council, the head of the School of Education, and the president of the Staff Trade Association.
