The four-year tenure of Dr. Omar Alieu Touray as President of the ECOWAS Commission is set to conclude in July 2026, marking the end of his mandate that began on July 3, 2022, following his unanimous appointment to lead the regional body for the 2022–2026 period.

As preparations begin for the next leadership transition, the Government of Senegal has formally announced its intention to present a candidate for the top position. In a communiqué issued by the Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad, authorities confirmed that President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye will propose retired Air Force General Birame Diop, current Minister of the Armed Forces, at the upcoming Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States scheduled for July 2026.

According to the statement, General Diop’s candidacy reflects Senegal’s commitment to offering what it describes as a highly qualified and experienced leader to guide the regional organization. The government highlighted his leadership credentials, integrity, and extensive experience in peace, security, governance, and regional integration.

General Diop has held several senior positions within Senegal’s military and government, including Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Chief of the Private Staff of the President, and Chief of Staff of the Air Force. His international experience includes serving as military advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General within the Department of Peace Operations, where he contributed to global conflict prevention and peacekeeping efforts. He has also worked extensively with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, training senior African civil and military officials on security and development issues.

Meanwhile, President Faye undertook a one-day official visit to The Gambia on May 30, 2026, where he held talks with President Adama Barrow at the State House. No details of the discussions were disclosed to the press following the meeting.

While the official agenda of the visit remains unclear, the timing has prompted speculation among observers about whether consultations related to the forthcoming ECOWAS leadership transition may have been part of the discussions, given the strategic importance of regional consensus in such appointments.

The ECOWAS Commission presidency is a key position within the bloc, responsible for overseeing policy implementation, regional integration initiatives, and coordination among member states. The selection of the next Commission President is expected to be a significant decision for the region amid ongoing political and security challenges.
