Mama Kandeh, leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has challenged President Adama Barrow to contest elections without coalition support, asserting that the president’s party lacks an independent political base.
Speaking at a political meeting in Kitty, Kandeh argued that President Barrow has not secured an outright electoral victory without the backing of allied parties. He cited the president’s reliance on partnerships with the National Reconciliation Party (NRP), Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), Citizen Alliance (CA), Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), and Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress (GPDP) as evidence of the National People’s Party’s (NPP) limited standalone strength.
“I want to inform President Barrow that he is the only president whose party does not have a base. There is nowhere you have independently won elections,” Kandeh stated.
Kandeh maintained that a strong political base would eliminate the need for alliances, adding that he is confident he could defeat President Barrow in a direct contest without coalition support.
He further called on Gambians to support the GDC in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that his political messaging since 2016 has been consistent and genuine.
Kandeh also highlighted his record of community support, noting that his assistance predates election cycles, in contrast to some political figures whom he accused of engaging with communities only during campaign periods.
“I am calling on Gambians to elect the GDC so we can develop the country, combat corruption, and invest in agriculture to achieve food self-sufficiency,” he said.
