Kiang West NAM Questions Durability of Newly Inaugurated Roads

The National Assembly Member for Kiang West Constituency, Hon. Lamin Ceesay, has expressed concern over the quality and long-term durability of newly inaugurated roads in Kiang West by the President.
Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Hon. Ceesay welcomed the long-awaited road development but argued that the standard of work does not meet expectations and may not be sustainable.
“So, when you look at that road, are we happy? Yes, we are happy. Is it going to be sustainable? The answer is absolutely not because the quality is not really there,” he said.
He further stated that the roads, in his view, do not reflect the standard of fully constructed road infrastructure seen in other parts of the country, noting that some sections already show signs of deterioration.
“They have just poured basalt there, and that is it. It is not a tar road as you see in Kotu and other areas; it’s a different one,” he added.
Hon. Ceesay also claimed that parts of the road surface had begun to degrade even before the peak of the rainy season.
“When rain comes, you see some other parts of the road, basalt that has been washed away. Many parts have already been washed away in the last rainy season,” he said.
Despite his criticism of the construction quality, he acknowledged that the project has been widely welcomed by residents, describing it as a significant relief for a community that has long awaited improved road infrastructure.
“Obviously, there are a lot of joys around the people in the constituency,” he said.
He further emphasized that citizens contribute to national development through taxation and therefore deserve durable and high-quality infrastructure.
“So long as every citizen of this country pays taxes, we all pay road tax, and we all deserve development,” he said.
