President Adama Barrow has challenged opposition parties to unite behind Ousainu Darboe, the flagbearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP), as their candidate in the forthcoming presidential election, asserting that he could defeat him decisively.

Speaking at a gathering in Foday Kunda during the launch of new road projects, President Barrow said he would welcome a united opposition front presenting a single candidate to contest against him.

“Let them unite and make my father their candidate. It will just take one hit to defeat him and make him retire,” the president remarked.

He also criticized newly formed political parties, claiming that many of their members were not visible during the country’s 2016 political transition. According to him, these individuals have since emerged and are now projecting confidence due to the democratic space established under his leadership.

President Barrow further stated that the development achieved across The Gambia is evident nationwide, citing areas such as Foday Kunda, Baja Kunda, Wuli, Basse, Jimara, Kombo, and the coastal road network as examples.

“They will come and say President Barrow cannot deliver, but they are destroyers and enemies of themselves. They do not love themselves, The Gambia, or its people. I am your servant, and I will do what you want,” he said, cautioning citizens against opposition narratives.

The president also warned against actions that could disrupt the electoral process, alleging that some individuals aim to incite conflict to derail the upcoming election.

“This is what they want, but it is not what we want. Do not argue or fight,” he urged.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, noting that national development depends on stability. President Barrow added that his supporters outnumber those of the opposition and expressed confidence in securing victory at the polls.
