The Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice said on Tuesday that it had begun reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death of Omar Badjie and had requested the full police case file, a step that could determine whether criminal charges will be brought against officers involved.

In a statement issued on May 5, the Ministry of Justice said it had received the coroner’s inquest report from Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow and had asked the Inspector General of Police to submit all relevant materials for a comprehensive legal assessment.

The ministry indicated that it would give full consideration to the coroner’s findings and recommendations, including the possibility of prosecuting officers implicated in the case. “Where the evidence warrants, appropriate legal action will be taken without reservation,” the statement said.

Mr. Badjie, a resident of Mandinary Village, died on Sept. 26, 2025, after an encounter with law enforcement officers. In her findings, the coroner, Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy, concluded that he died of an acute brain injury brought on by physical exertion, stress, and assault during a police pursuit. She recommended that the matter be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for consideration of criminal charges.

The ministry acknowledged the public attention the case has drawn and urged restraint as the legal process unfolds. It said it remained committed to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens.

The request for the police file marks a critical stage in the case, as prosecutors weigh whether the evidence supports indictments against the officers involved.
