President Adama Barrow on Monday defended his tenure, asserting that his “only crime” is being elected president, and criticized those who believe the nation’s highest office should be reserved for elites.

Speaking at the commissioning of a new ferry in Barra, Mr. Barrow said his detractors assume leadership should be confined to residents of affluent areas like Pipeline and Fajara. “I know that I have done no wrongdoing to anyone. I have not killed, arrested, or harassed anyone, yet some believe only those from certain neighborhoods should hold the presidency,” he said.

He framed his election as a matter of divine choice rather than social hierarchy. “This is what they think, but that is not how God operates. God is alone in his office and does not seek anyone’s advice in doing what he wants to do. This is why he went all the way to a small village, Mankamang Kunda, and chose President Barrow,” he added.

Describing himself as a “knife with two tips,” Mr. Barrow emphasized his roots in both rural Gambia and the capital, asserting that his background gives him insight into the needs and perspectives of all Gambians. He urged citizens to exercise patience as his administration continues to implement development initiatives.

“The progress you see now is just the beginning,” he said. “When we reach 2027, you will see the full scope of what we are capable of achieving.”

The president’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about social equity and political representation in The Gambia, reflecting tensions between traditional elites and leaders emerging from more modest backgrounds.
