President Adama Barrow on Thursday called for unity, political restraint, and compassion in a message marking the end of Ramadan, as Muslims across The Gambia prepared to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

In a nationally broadcast address delivered on the eve of the holiday, Mr. Barrow extended congratulations to Muslims observing the festival, locally known as Koriteh, and thanked religious leaders for guiding worshipers through the fasting month.

“Ramadan is a special month of devotion to prayer, sacrifice, and reflection,” Mr. Barrow said, adding that fasting strengthens faith, discipline, and spiritual connection.

The president used the occasion to highlight what he described as progress made since he took office in 2017, pointing to efforts to rebuild public institutions, strengthen democratic governance, and expand access to services.

He cited investments in infrastructure, health care, and education as key drivers of broader opportunity, while reaffirming his government’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law—principles he said have enhanced the country’s international standing.

Mr. Barrow also emphasized The Gambia’s long tradition of religious tolerance and coexistence among its diverse communities, calling it central to national unity and development.

He urged political leaders and citizens to avoid divisive rhetoric, warning against allowing politics to fracture communities.

“Politics must serve as a pathway to constructive citizenship, good governance, and national development, not as a source of division,” he said, appealing for engagement that prioritizes the national interest.

In a nod to interfaith harmony, Mr. Barrow acknowledged Christians observing Lent, expressing hope that their period of reflection would bring blessings to both the faithful and the country.

He also commended charitable groups, businesses, and individuals who supported vulnerable people during Ramadan, while cautioning traders against raising the prices of essential goods, particularly food.

“Our progress depends on understanding, discipline, and unity,” he said.

Closing his address, Mr. Barrow urged Gambians to remember those affected by conflict and instability worldwide, calling for prayers and renewed commitment to peace and solidarity as the country marks the holiday.
