Border patrol officers in the North Bank Region intercepted 22 people suspected of attempting to migrate irregularly, the Gambia Immigration Department said on Wednesday.

The operation took place around 4:30 a.m. on February 26 in the town of Sami, where officers, acting on what the department described as credible intelligence, raided an unfinished building and detained the group.

According to an official statement, those apprehended included 18 nationals of Guinea — among them two women and one minor — as well as two Ivorians and two Malians. The authorities did not release the identities of the detainees.

The individuals are being held at the Barra Immigration Station and are expected to be transferred to Tanji for further investigation and processing, the department said.

In its statement, the immigration authorities reiterated their commitment to curbing irregular migration, safeguarding lives, and maintaining the country’s border integrity.

The interception underscores ongoing efforts by Gambian officials to tighten border controls amid continued concerns over irregular migration routes through West Africa.
