Suwaibou Touray, the newly elected Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), has outlined the conditions under which his party would consider joining a coalition ahead of the December 5 presidential election.
In an interview with QTV, Touray emphasized that any coalition must be formalized through a comprehensive agreement encompassing all participating parties’ manifestos, predetermined seat allocations, and parliamentary oversight on ministerial dismissals.
“We should not wait till we take over to agree on these. Everything must be stipulated in Black and white,” he said, stressing that pre-election agreements are essential to prevent the incumbent from acting unilaterally.
Touray acknowledged Gambians’ desire for a coalition but noted lingering uncertainty stemming from the 2026 coalition experience. He explained that coalitions in the Gambian context are typically temporary arrangements designed to address specific crises rather than long-term partnerships.
He emphasized that Gambians desire a coalition, and any politician serious about change must share that vision.
With the December election approaching, discussions and debates are intensifying among citizens and political parties about the possibility of forming a united front to challenge President Adama Barrow.
