The Gambia Immigration Department (GID), in collaboration with the Spanish Guardia Civil stationed in The Gambia, has intercepted 126 individuals attempting to undertake irregular migration along the country’s coastline.
The operation, conducted on Monday, June 1, 2026, was carried out by the GID’s Border Patrol Unit through its Tanji Migration Management Unit across three coastal communities—Lamin, Tujereng, and Westfield in the West Coast Region.
According to official figures released by the GID, those intercepted include 73 Guineans, 22 Malians, 30 Senegalese, and one Burkinabe national. The group comprised 37 adult males, 32 adult females, and 61 minors.
In a statement, the department noted that the operation forms part of ongoing collaborative efforts aimed at disrupting irregular migration routes and combating human smuggling networks.
“The interception forms part of the GID’s existing collaborations directed at the disruption of clandestine movement of migrants, underscoring its commitment towards discouraging smugglers from using The Gambia as a launch pad to the Canary Islands,” the statement read.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening border surveillance and international cooperation to curb irregular migration and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
