Speaking before the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Vice President Muhammed B.S. Jallow of The Gambia reaffirmed his country’s commitment to delivering credible and transparent elections in 2026, emphasizing the government’s dedication to strengthening democracy and good governance.
Addressing world leaders, Vice President Jallow highlighted the Barrow administration’s track record since The Gambia’s democratic transition.“In the past eight years, the government has also organized several elections in a credible, impartial, and transparent manner, in line with domestic laws and international norms and standards,” he said. “And plans are on for holding presidential elections next year.”
Mr. Jallow stressed that electoral credibility is central to the nation’s broader reform agenda, which seeks to consolidate participatory democracy, foster sustainable development, and strengthen institutions.
“With our current reform agenda that is inclusive, the government is eyeing a future without the realm of immense potential and possibility,” he said, noting efforts to address past grievances through recognition of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
The vice president also outlined ongoing legislative reforms designed to improve accountability, including the creation of a special prosecutor’s office for international crimes and the enactment of a new Anti-Corruption Act—steps intended to establish a permanent Anti-Corruption Commission.
“These are all part of our national efforts to deliver restorative and transformative justice, build a clear path towards nation building, and lay a foundation for social justice as well as prevent impunity,” Mr. Jallow said.
He concluded by reaffirming that the upcoming elections would reflect the government’s mission to uphold democratic values and transparency.
