The Unite Movement for Change (UNITE) is reporting a wave of defections from rival political parties, signaling growing momentum for the movement ahead of upcoming political activities.
Senior movement and party figure Hon. Yahya Menteng Sanyang described the trend as evidence that the movement’s message is resonating across the political spectrum. In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, March 2, 2026, Hon. Sanyang announced several new entrants into the party’s ranks.
Among the notable defections is Tijan Cham, a councillor representing Karantaba Ward under the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC). Hon. Sanyang characterized the move as a significant gain for UNITE, declaring in his post that the party is “sweeping.”
Buba Jabang, a supporter of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has also pledged his support to the movement and publicly endorsed Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, leader of UNITE.
Hon. Sanyang noted that the movement’s appeal extends beyond political officeholders to professionals and civic actors. “Seeing professionals like Buba join the movement reaffirms that we are on the right track and doing the right thing,” he stated.
In addition, Polo Bah, a former member of the National People’s Party (NPP), has joined UNITE, further strengthening the party’s expanding base.
Omar Cham, previously a media advocate for the NPP, also confirmed his decision to align with UNITE. He described his departure from his former party as “difficult but necessary,” citing his constitutional right to support a political movement he believes best represents his aspirations and the country’s future.
The series of defections underscores shifting political dynamics, with UNITE positioning itself as an emerging force attracting support from across party lines.
