MC Cham Jr., the campaign manager of the UNITE movement, has urged Momodou Sabally, the national youth president of the governing National People’s Party, to direct his criticism at President Adama Barrow and his administration rather than at Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda.
Speaking at a UNITE campaign event in Kotu Quarry on Sunday, Mr. Cham accused Mr. Sabally of bearing some responsibility for the development challenges facing communities such as Kotu-Manjai.
Mr. Cham stated that Mr. Sabally had previously been sanctioned over the mismanagement of public funds. He argued that the money in question, had it been properly invested in Kotu, could have financed major infrastructure and social services in the area.
“The money Momodou Sabally mismanaged, if injected into Kotu right now, would have given Kotu good roads, a hospital, and proper markets,” Mr. Cham told the gathering.
He said Mr. Sabally should hold President Barrow’s government accountable for the difficulties confronting residents instead of attacking Mayor Bensouda, who is also UNITE’s presidential candidate.
Mr. Cham also responded to comments reportedly made by Bakary Badjie of the NPP at a party gathering earlier in the week. Mr. Badjie addressed the audience in Jola and described himself as a son of the Jola community.
Highlighting his own family ties to the community, Mr. Cham said his mother, Agie Colley, is a native of Sukuta and of Jola heritage. He therefore considers himself a grandson of the community, he said.
