Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), described the 2026 presidential election as a critical opportunity to “rescue” The Gambia during a nationwide tour meeting in Mandinaba, West Coast Region (WCR) on Wednesday.
Darboe expressed concern over the increasing number of Gambians, particularly youth and women with children, embarking on dangerous migration routes. “If this country is not rescued in 2026, it will be doomed. Today, we are seeing women carrying their babies making this journey,” he said.
He urged citizens to prevent such outcomes through responsible governance, emphasizing that “only the UDP can ensure this.” Darboe encouraged the audience to focus on preventing President Adama Barrow from securing a third term, emphasizing that the ballot box is the only means to achieve this.
“Show President Barrow that Gambians do not want him by voting him out in the 2026 presidential election,” Darboe stated. He added with a touch of humor, “Remove him from State House, so he can go stay in Mankamang Kunda and visit me when I go to Bansang.”
Darboe also called on residents of the West Coast Region to support the UDP, educate others, and raise awareness to ensure voter turnout in favor of his party. He highlighted the strategic importance of the region, referring to it as both the political and economic powerhouse of the country.
“I believe you will give me your votes because of the current situation in the country, especially in the West Coast Region,” he said. Darboe further noted that the region’s resources, including its river and land, remain underutilized, stressing the potential for economic growth under UDP leadership.
