Senior police officers from the Turkish Police Academy have arrived in the Gambia to help the small nation strengthen its security ahead of the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The four officers met with country’s top security officers and the interior minister Ebrima Mballow on Tuesday.

They are to assess Gambia’s security needs ahead of the summit slated for November 2019 which will inform the kind of adjustments needed for the successful hosting of the Summit.

The public relations officers of the OIC secretariat in Gambia, Essa Bokar Sy, said the experience of the Turkish security in hosting international conferences such as G20 is a valuable asset in helping Gambia to prepare.

“The Turkish government have been with the Gambia since after independence and they are familiar with the terrain as far as security is concern and diplomatic protocols too…,” Sy said.

Meanwhile, the visiting Turkish police who could not speak to the media because of restrictions in their line of work, are to visit the International Conference Centre on Tuesday.

And on Wednesday, the officers are to also visit the police training school, various borders posts and also assess the operational equipment of the Gambian police.

Turkey, the current chair of the OIC, has two weeks ago donated several cameras to Gambia’s public broadcaster in preparation of the summit.
