Momodou Sabally, the national youth president of the National People’s Party (NPP) and special adviser on presidential affairs, said in a recent television interview that he is confident President Adama Barrow will win re-election in the 2026 presidential election.

“I don’t see anything that can make President Barrow lose the 2026 elections,” He Said.

He argued that ongoing efforts by opposition parties to form a coalition have been undermined by internal disagreements and rivalry, weakening their ability to mount a serious challenge to the incumbent president.

According to Mr. Sabally, opposition supporters at home and abroad continue to place their hopes on the prospect of a coalition, but he maintained that divisions among opposition leaders have already determined the outcome of the election.

“We have already won. The reason Barrow will win is because, opposition, in and out of the country, what gives them hope, that they will win, is because of a coalition,” He Said.

Mr. Sabally accused opposition parties of engaging in infighting that has damaged their credibility, citing the departure of Talib Bensouda from the United Democratic Party (UDP) as a key example. “Oppositions are fighting and destroying each other and Talib Bensouda started it by leaving the UDP,” he said.

He also questioned the seriousness of coalition talks that excluded the UDP, which he described as the country’s largest opposition party.

“A coalition meeting was held and UDP was not called, which is funny because love them or hate them, the UDP is the biggest opposition party. I don’t see anything that can make President Barrow lose the 2026 elections,” Sabally said. “

Emphasizing the importance of stability, Mr. Sabally called on all political actors and citizens to maintain peace throughout the electoral period, warning against the pursuit of political power through violence.

“What we need in this country is peace. If you look for the Presidency in violence, you will run it in violence, let’s maintain peace and give people their rights. Whosoever wants to contest they can but I don’t see any way they can defeat President Barrow,” He Said.

He concluded by urging Gambians to prioritize peace and stability as the country prepares for the next presidential election. “Whatever we are doing, we should maintain peace,” he said.
