The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chess in Gambia Schools and Communities to integrate chess into the school system as a tool for enhancing critical thinking, decision-making, and social inclusion among students.
According to the ministry, the initiative is designed to diversify school sports while equipping students with essential 21st-century skills.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, MoBSE’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Louis Moses Mendy, described the partnership as a milestone in advancing school sports. He stressed the importance of broadening sporting opportunities to nurture young talent and enable students to excel both academically and in extracurricular activities.
“This partnership with MoBSE will allow the organization to expand its reach and impact, bringing the benefits of chess to a wider network of students and communities across The Gambia,” the ministry noted.
Chess, played on a 64-square board between two opponents, is globally recognized for fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, strategic planning, and resilience—skills the ministry believes will strengthen both students’ academic performance and personal development.
