The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources and partners on Tuesday, embarked on a day-long visit to numerous sites within the Greater Banjul area, to have a better understanding of environmental challenges arising from the activities at the sites that were affected by the floods.

Speaking to the Press at Jabang Estate Rohey John Manjang, the Minister of Environment Climate Change, and Natural Resources urged the General public to take care of their environment saying technicians are working very hard to create waterways to alleviate flooding.

“We are asking everybody to take care of their neighborhood and the technicians are going to work very hard to make sure at least waterways are created. I know is going to be very challenging, some of them have already established structures on the waterway and this needs to go. Is better for at least two people to be affected than the entire community or the entire country,” She stated.

The minister added that they are not sacrificing people, but they are making decisions and taking actions to fix the problem;

“We are not saying that we have to sacrifice some people but we need to fix the problem and fixing the problem you will have to make sure that you affect at least one or two people but we will also work on the compensation plan as well. In as much as we are going to demolish but we want to make sure that we work on the right procedures to compensate people,” She said.

The objectives of the minister’s site visits are to better understand the environmental challenges arising from the activities at the sites that were affected by the floods and to effectively engage with the relevant institutions to propose and implement sustainable measures to manage or prevent the environmental challenges.
