Madi Jobarteh, executive director of the Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice, has urged Gambians not to vote for President Adama Barrow in the 2026 presidential election, arguing that no leader should remain in office for more than 10 years.
Speaking in an interview with Teledal, Mr. Jobarteh said voters should consider the character, honesty, and record of each candidate, including whether political leaders had fulfilled their promises.
“President Barrow should not have a third term, and I am urging citizens not to vote for President Adama Barrow,” Mr. Jobarteh said. “It is for the security and development of the country.”
Mr. Barrow, who took office in 2017, is expected to seek another term in the December election. The Gambia’s current Constitution does not impose a presidential term limit.
Mr. Jobarteh questioned the legal framework allowing Mr. Barrow to run again, saying there had previously been broad agreement—including from the president—that constitutional reforms should prevent leaders from remaining in power indefinitely.
He also cited Mr. Barrow’s 2016 campaign manifesto, which he said included a commitment to limiting presidential tenure.
“If Barrow is not someone who stands by his word, then Gambians should show him that he can do what he wants, but we are going to protect our country and ensure that no president serves for more than 10 years,” Mr. Jobarteh said.
He argued that establishing a firm two-term limit would strengthen democratic institutions and reduce the risks associated with prolonged rule.
Mr. Jobarteh also emphasized the role of civil society organizations in elections, calling on them to educate voters and encourage greater public participation. An informed and engaged electorate, he said, was essential to protecting democratic values and holding political leaders accountable.
