The party leader and secretary general of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mama Kandeh, has strongly condemned voter intimidation ahead of the 2026 elections and called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to ensure that only Gambians are registered to vote.

Speaking at a GDC rally in the Buffer Zone, Kandeh said the upcoming elections must reflect the will of Gambian citizens and warned that any form of voter extortion or coercion would not be tolerated.

“The forthcoming elections are the right of Gambians to decide who should lead them—and I mean Gambians,” he said.

Kandeh emphasized that elections in The Gambia should be conducted freely and independently, without external interference, noting that Gambians do not participate in elections in other countries.

“Gambians do not go to vote in other countries. We should be allowed to conduct our own elections freely. We are therefore urging the IEC to register only Gambians,” he stated.

He also called on traditional authorities, including Alkalos and chiefs, to uphold the laws of the country during the electoral process and refrain from engaging in partisan politics.

Additionally, the GDC leader urged party supporters to document and report any attempts by regional governors or other officials to pressure them into leaving the GDC for rival political parties.
