The Government of The Gambia has received commendation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its steady economic progress and commitment to reform over the past seven years.

According to a statement from the State House, IMF Deputy Managing Director Bo Li praised the country’s performance, highlighting the satisfactory implementation of IMF-supported programmes. He made the remarks during a courtesy visit to President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul.

In response, President Barrow reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and ongoing digitalization efforts aimed at curbing corruption and enhancing domestic revenue mobilization.

The President also called on the IMF to maintain its support for The Gambia’s development agenda, while underscoring that the primary responsibility for national development rests with Gambian citizens.

He further emphasized the government’s social contract with the people, adherence to institutional frameworks, and the pivotal role of the private sector in driving economic growth.

President Barrow stressed the importance of maintaining national security and economic stability as essential foundations for delivering social programmes, while also calling for sustained peace and stability across the country.

The statement added that The Gambia is on track to complete its second IMF-supported programme by the end of the year and is preparing to embark on a new one.

Mr. Li’s visit is expected to deepen engagement with Gambian authorities, who, according to the IMF, have demonstrated a strong commitment to macroeconomic stability and structural reforms.
