Government Announces Bread Price Increase Effective July 1st
By Buba Gagigo
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE), has announced that the price of bread will increase nationwide, effective July 1st, 2025. This decision follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders in the sector.
In a statement, the Ministry explained that after collecting detailed data on bread production costs from bakeries across the country, several high-level meetings were held on May 27th and 28th, 2025. These meetings brought together the Bakers Union, the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC), and the Consumer Consortium to negotiate adjustments in bread pricing, weight, and quality, while carefully considering the interests of both consumers and producers.
As a result of these deliberations, all parties agreed to the following changes:
- The average weight of ‘Senfur’ bread will increase from 133g to 160g, with the price rising from D10 to D12 per loaf.
- The average weight of ‘Tapalapa’ bread will increase from 165g to 190g, with the price also moving from D10 to D12 per loaf.
Accordingly, the government informs the general public that, starting July 1st, 2025, the official price of Senfur will be D12 for a 160g loaf, and Tapalapa will also be D12 for a 190g loaf across the country.
Additionally, the Ministry announced that bread will continue to be available for purchase at bakeries at a wholesale rate of D10 per loaf or D120 per dozen.
“The Ministry remains committed to ongoing engagement with all stakeholders in the bread supply chain to ensure fair and sustainable outcomes that balance the interests of producers and consumers,” the statement emphasized. “We call on all stakeholders to strictly adhere to the agreed prices and weights for Senfur and Tapalapa.”
The Ministry further stated that, through the Legal Metrology Department under the Gambia Standards Bureau, it will actively monitor compliance with these new standards. The public will also be educated on how to verify the weight of fresh bread. Any bakery found selling underweight loaves will be in breach of the agreement and will face appropriate sanctions.
