The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has identified a new departure point used for irregular migration in Jurrunku, Upper Niumi, located approximately seven kilometres off the main highway.

According to a statement published on the GID’s official Facebook page on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the discovery followed a credible tip-off regarding suspicious movements in the area. Acting on the information, Chief Superintendent Pa Muhammed Phatty, Operations Commander for the North Bank Region (NBR), led a dedicated enforcement team to the site.

The team conducted spot checks, inspections, and environmental mapping to assess the location and its potential use by smugglers.

“The GID draws public attention to the evolving tactics of smugglers, who exploit isolated water bodies to evade law enforcement,” the statement noted.

In response, the GID has established continuous patrols around the area to deter irregular migration activities. The department has also called on local communities to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious or irregular movements.

“Together, we can curb irregular migration, safeguard lives, and uphold our national integrity,” the statement added.
