Abdoulie Taal, the regional technical chairman of the Gambia Democratic Congress in the Upper River Region, has resigned from both his party post and his membership, announcing his decision to join the ruling National People’s Party.

Mr. Taal confirmed the move in two letters dated Jan. 30 and Feb. 4, 2026, marking a significant defection from the opposition GDC to President Adama Barrow’s party.

In his resignation letter to the GDC’s secretary general and party leader, Mr. Taal said his departure followed “careful consideration” and was motivated by personal reasons. He thanked the party for the opportunity to serve in several leadership roles over the years.

“I appreciate the opportunity to have been part of the party’s regional executive and contributed to the success of GDC,” he wrote. “I served as the regional chairman, vice regional chairman, mobilizer general, and now regional technical chairman.”

He also expressed gratitude to party members and wished the leadership well in its future efforts. “I want to take this opportunity to thank every member of GDC, and I wish the party and its leadership all the best in their future endeavors,” he said.

Days later, in a separate letter addressed to the NPP’s Upper River Region bureau, Mr. Taal formally declared his allegiance to the governing party, effective immediately.

“I am hereby declaring my allegiance to the National People’s Party with immediate effect,” he wrote. “This is to formally inform you and the entire NPP membership that I have joined the party to support the agendas of the party and the president of the Republic, His Excellency Adama Barrow.”

Mr. Taal said his decision was influenced by what he described as the government’s development record, citing ongoing initiatives under the NPP administration. He added that he hoped to contribute directly to the country’s progress.

“This decision came after witnessing the numerous development initiatives by the NPP government,” he said. “I wish to join you to contribute to the development of The Gambia.”
