Denton Bridge Residents

The residents at Denton Bridge have attributed the maiden flooding in the area to the sand mining by a firm.
The residents revealed these in the presence of the Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe during her visit to the area amid floods in the area.
“Everything is caused by the sand miners. They are the cause of this flood here, and if we are not careful it will destroy the bridge, and it’s all caused by the sand miners. They are digging, and the water is becoming more powerful to cause flood. I have been working here for 26 years, but this has never happened here,” Modi Sallah told Kerr Fatou on Saturday.
Another resident Ousman Sarr said: “If you come here tomorrow at 10am, you will not be able to come in with your vehicles. Everywhere will be flooding. And this is the first time this is happening and this sand mining is the cause. We have expressed our concern several times but nothing is done about it. We are all Gambians and we don’t have anywhere apart from here. Right now, the bridge is bent and if you disagree with I’m saying, wait for the low tides and I will show you.”
A third resident, Alagie Sirreh Njie also shared his observations: “There is something new within the connected waters which should be rectified. We cannot do anything about it, but we are appealing to the government to help us. You cannot sit inside your office and you don’t go out to know what is happening outside. Then in the 70s the officials used to go around to see the happenings, but not anymore.”
While responding to their concerns, the Banjul, Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe promised to forward their concerns to the right authorities.
“It’s very painful. But I will report back everything to the authorities. They know everything that is happening. You think they don’t about this sand mining? They know more than you. The problem is they don’t respect the councils…,” she said.
