Veteran journalist and former Minister of Information, Demba Ali Jawo, has said it is unlikely that any single political party in The Gambia can remove President Adama Barrow from power without forming a coalition.
In a recent interview, Jawo explained that President Barrow’s access to significant financial and logistical resources gives the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) a considerable advantage ahead of the 2026 elections.
“I mean, it is very unlikely that any single party can be able to dislodge Barrow because, well, he is got a lot of resources behind him, and you know, we all know that many of these businessmen in this country are backing the NPP, giving them all the money, all the resources they need,” he said.
He added that political defections and shifting allegiances have long been a feature of Gambian politics, further complicating efforts to build a strong opposition front.
“These people left the UDP, and others came to join the UDP. This has been happening in all the parties; people have been cross-carpeting. It has been going on in this country since the dawn of politics in this country,” he said.
Jawo emphasized that the financial backing the NPP enjoys from influential business figures continues to strengthen the party’s position against the opposition.
“Various businesses that have entities in this country have been sponsoring the NPP,” he said.
