The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Sunday, February 1, 2026, opened a top management retreat at the Kairaba Hotel, convening senior officials and party leaders from across the country. The gathering brought together representatives from all regions as part of efforts to reflect on the party’s direction and strengthen internal coordination.

Addressing the retreat, the party’s Secretary General and leader, lawyer ANM Ousainu Darboe, described the moment as pivotal, characterizing it as “a defining moment for our party and for our country.” His remarks focused on the UDP’s journey over three decades and paid tribute to the individuals who laid its foundations.

Mr. Darboe acknowledged several long-serving members, recalling their early sacrifices and commitment to the party’s cause. He singled out former Deputy Speaker Alhagie Momodou Sanneh, a founding member, to illustrate the deep personal bonds forged during the party’s formative years.

“He and the other gentlemen, in fact all of them seated at the high table, when I was very young then, Mboge Saidykhan was in his 20s. He used to sleep on the veranda when I slept in the rooms,” he added, reflecting on the shared hardships that marked their early political struggle.

The UDP leader praised the resolve of those who answered the call to serve in 1996, noting that their readiness to confront daunting challenges helped shape the party’s present standing. “They came up without any hesitation, rose up to the challenges, and now, here we are, with their determination, with their support, UDP has been brought to where it is today,” he said.

Mr. Darboe also expressed appreciation for the continued guidance he receives from senior figures who no longer hold executive positions, including Alhagie Ansuding Keita and Alhaji Momodou Sanneh.

“Although you are no longer an executive, you continue to counsel me; you continue to give me wise advice. And, of course, Alhagie Ansuding Keita and Alhaji Momodou Sanneh, your role is just as if you were in the executive today. I wish that God, the Almighty, in his infinite mercy, will let you live on to see your dreams, your aspirations, crowned,” he said.

Reflecting on the party’s 30th anniversary, Mr. Darboe said the milestone carried significance beyond mere longevity. According to him, it symbolizes continuity of purpose, resilience, and a sustained commitment to democratic ideals and national service.

“This year marks 30 years of the United Democratic Party, its existence. That milestone is significant, and it is significant not simply because of longevity, but because it reflects continuity of purpose, resilience in the present, and a sustained commitment to democratic values and national service. In human terms, a 30-year marriage is celebrated as a peer anniversary,” he said.

The retreat continues as the party’s leadership deliberates on its strategic priorities amid evolving national political dynamics.
