Demba Ali Jawo, former Minister of Information and a member of the Apex Initiative (APEX), has said the group is actively engaging other platforms and stakeholders to coordinate efforts aimed at uniting opposition parties ahead of the 2026 elections.
He explained that APEX is aware of parallel initiatives seeking to form an opposition coalition and has already begun reaching out to some of these groups to explore areas of coordination. According to Jawo, the shared objective is to prevent fragmented efforts and bring all opposition actors together under a cohesive framework.
“APEX is aware of the existence of other groups trying to bring the opposition together in the form of a coalition. In fact, APEX has already started contacting some of these groups to see how best we can coordinate, because the objective is the same—to bring the opposition into a cohesive coalition,” he said.
Jawo noted that discussions are ongoing and acknowledged that personality differences among political leaders could pose challenges. However, he expressed optimism that dialogue could help resolve such issues.
“It will not be easy, because personality differences are quite obvious in some of these parties, but I believe that when they sit around the table, they can iron out those differences and arrive at an amicable approach to forming a coalition,” he said.
He further emphasized that APEX will maintain strict neutrality throughout the process, stressing that none of its members are affiliated with any political party.
“I can assure you that the members of APEX, even though we are all volunteers, are very impartial as far as politics is concerned. Being political and being partisan are two different things, and we try as much as possible to remain non-partisan,” he said.
Jawo also made it clear that APEX’s role is temporary and will end once a coalition is successfully formed, in order to preserve the group’s credibility.
“As soon as that happens and APEX fades out, the members of APEX will kind of go back to wherever they were. I can definitely assure you that we are not interested in becoming a member of any of the political parties and we will never do that because our credibility hinges on that,” he said.
