The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) has officially requested a police permit to organize a peaceful protest to voice their concerns and dissatisfaction with the recently amended 2020 Draft Constitution.
“The Coalition of Progressive Gambians writes to apply for a permit for a nationwide peaceful protest. The proposed peaceful protest is scheduled to take place on the 7th of November 2024; This peaceful protest is planned to express our concern and dissatisfaction with the recently amended 2020 Draft Constitution,” CoPG writes in a letter to the IGP.
The group expressed confidence that, in accordance with the General Orders and Section 2 of the Public Order Act No.7 of the 1961 CAP 22.01, the IGP’s office will facilitate the issuance of a permit. They emphasized that this permit would allow them to exercise their constitutional rights, as outlined in Section 25(2)D of the 1997 Constitution, which guarantees their freedom to peaceful assembly and expression to raise their concerns.
