The Office of the Governor of the Central River Region (CRR) has announced the retirement of Mr. Baboucarr Nyang as Alkalo of Nyangen Village in Niani District, citing a breach of residency requirements.
According to an official letter dated 20 May 2026, the decision was approved by the Minister for Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs and took effect on 2 May 2026.
The correspondence states that Mr. Nyang’s removal was based on his failure to reside within the village he was appointed to lead, in violation of Section 143(1)(b) of the Local Government Act 2002. The provision requires that an Alkalo must be a resident of the community under his or her jurisdiction.
The Governor’s Office indicated that the action was taken in accordance with statutory provisions governing local leadership and administrative conduct. Copies of the letter were also forwarded to relevant authorities, including the Head Chief of Niani District, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Lands, the Accountant General, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Kuntaur Area Council.
The letter was signed on behalf of the Governor by Hon. Sainey Mbye, whose official designation was not specified in the document.
The development follows earlier actions by regional authorities, including the seizure of Mr. Nyang’s official stamp amid allegations that he had delegated his responsibilities to his son.
However, Mr. Nyang’s son, along with members of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has alleged that the decision was politically motivated. They claim the Alkalo was targeted due to his son’s association with the opposition movement, arguing that delegation of duties by elderly Alkalos is a common practice across the country.
